NEVER NOT PIVOTing:
Nakai Theatre’s Pivot Festival 2022 brings us together again
Nakai Theatre released its lineup for Pivot Festival 2022 today. The two-week festival runs from January 11–22, 2022 and brings theatre, storytelling and comedy to the Yukon.
Pivot Festival brings back some favourites, including the kicking off with the Pivot Poetry Crawl—a bit of a twist on the regular Story Crawl—folks will stomp through the snow along the river from Shipyards Park to the Old Fire Hall, meeting poets along the way.
And, last year's beloved Sun Room is coming back. Even if international travel is technically allowed—let’s be realistic, most of us aren’t getting to a beach this winter. Spend time in the Sun Room with friends before or after work.
In the evenings, we have Ramshackle Theatre presenting Death, Jesus and Friends, a deeply silly and irreverent new puppet show performed by Brian Fidler. Fidler’s 30-minute performance will be followed by local creatives performing their Short Works for Long Nights.
The dynamic duo of Folk Lordz, Todd Houseman and Ben Gorodetsky, return to the festival this year, in-person this time! Each night of their improv comedy performances will feature a local guest inspiring and collaborating with the Folk Lordz. After leading an online workshop for Pivot 2021, it’s great to welcome them to the territory this time around.
We’re thrilled to introduce Whitehorse to multi-talented Vancouver performer, Candice Roberts, who clowns with gender roles with her Fringe hit Larry.
In thinking of a Pivot for the Future, we have two evenings of conversations to explore a better tomorrow through theatre. Local performer Christine Genier will share her ideas and impulses towards Indigenous Futurism and Science Fiction. And interdisciplinary artist Nicole Schafenaker will lead a conversation about the arts’ role in climate justice sparked by a short play written by Yukoner Wren Brian.
Festival show passes and individual tickets are on sale now at nakaitheatre.com.
About Pivot Theatre Festival
Pivot 2022 will be the 14th iteration of the festival in Whitehorse. The festival is an invitation to connect with people and theatre close to home and from around the world. We try every year to transcend assumptions about theatre by mixing inspirational productions, revisiting crowd favourites, and providing opportunities for the community to join in the creative fun. Pivot brings lightness and connection in the dark days of winter.
