Layers of seeing – Art in the woods

In the summer of 2023, Nakai continued our learning and development for performances outside, with the assistance of the funding from the Sector Innovation project Old Dogs, New Tricks: What is Sustainable Theatre Design. We held two weeks of creative experiments during the summer of 2023 with locals and summer staff.

These workshop sessions will inform Nakai’s continued work on these themes, as well as all the other work we do, as we aim to make our practice more sustainable.

Our experiments focussed on directing attention between near and far planes, on hiding elements big and small within a forest, on working without power and on spectacle that works at the scale of the vast landscapes on the Yukon without damaging that landscape.
