Season 40 wrap up
Well, that turned out different.
Thank you for supporting Nakai this year – our 40th. Thanks for creating and singing with us. Thanks for coming out in -47 to hear local storytellers; thanks for riding the bus with us and improvising in January. Thanks to everyone that made the first Theatre at the Scale of the Landscape residency a remarkable success.
And thank you for donating to our 40 for 40 Fundraising campaign.
This was a year that started out one way, and, for all of us, has changed radically.
Your support means that Nakai is able to weather these changes and, amidst the uncertainty, continue to contribute to a thriving territory through theatre.
In the scale of the changes, in these times, we are feeling lucky.
We’ve postponed 99 Stories Not About Gold and will bring it to you next year. And we’re “ok” as an organization - we’re flexible and well supported by operating grants.
And we’re adapting and asking, how can theatre help in these times. We’ll have some news about that coming up (hint: it does not involve live streaming, but does involve glue and being outside).
We’ve got some summer programming that we’ll be announcing very soon – opportunities to create and share at a distance - in ways that are only possible here.
Follow us updates on Facebook at /nakaitheatre and on Instagram at nakai.theatre.
We are also spending some time reflecting on what would have been.
April 28th would have been the premiere of 99 Stories Not About Gold
Nicole, Brian and I would probably be stressed out a bit, but trying to keep it light, and delighted to meet an audience. Sydney would have been making sure we had our presets done. Toronto-based lighting designer Trevor Schwellnus would have been staying in Whitehorse and collaborating with us. We would have weaved four giant rugs and put down the astroturf. Jenna and Zach would be taking care of the business.
I want to share some things from the process that started over a year ago and has included, along with those mentioned before, the wonderful Elyssia Sasaki and Claire Ness. And Itsy.
We have lots to look forward to when these times are over.
