Call for a Managing Producer

Nakai Theatre is looking for a Managing Producer to join a collaborative team with Artistic Director Jacob Zimmer. This position is based in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Nakai is a Yukon theatre company dedicated to contributing to a thriving territory and supporting creation and creators of theatre that can only be made here.

Up first will be a 2021 summer of big puppets and outdoor spectacle at a human scale. 

Our next three years include a focus on developing devised work with young people, more spectacular puppets in the summers, theatre at the scale of the landscape, and of course, our annual January Pivot Festival.

The Managing Producer position is 20-30 hours per week. We are open to those wanting to work part-time and/or have flexibility. 

The ideal candidate is a highly organized problem solver, a team player and has at least three years working experience in the non-profit and/or Arts Sector.

Managing Producer: Key Responsibilities

Producing

  • Project management of large-scale productions and multi-year community engagement activities

    • Work with team to book facilities, create schedules and contracts, manage box office, negotiate union agreements, and make travel and personnel hiring decisions for programs and contract artists; 

  • Attend performances, festivals, and conferences when appropriate to meet artists and promote the company’s projects, and help identify and establish producing partnerships and collaboration opportunities;

  • Collaborate in developing marketing and communication strategies;

  • Steward relationships with multiple stakeholders including donors, sponsors, politicians, board members, volunteers.

Organizational Development & Planning

  • In collaboration with the Artistic Director (AD), create and implement Nakai’s organizational and financial long and short-term plans, including projects being discussed for development;

  • Develop policies and procedures as necessary for administrative areas, such as human resources and finance, with the Board of Directors;

  • Contribute to development of strategies to reduce and remove barriers to employment, increased participation, and opportunities, and implement processes that make Nakai a thriving and just organization;

  • Serve as spokesperson or representative for the company as required;

  • Report on artistic, financial, personnel, promotional and contractual plans to the Board of Directors (with Artistic Director); and coordinate the meetings and keep necessary records.

Administration

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the company; 

  • In collaboration with the AD, prepare and write grant applications to appropriate government funding agencies, and manage revenue generation via public, private and foundation fundraising activities; 

  • In collaboration with the AD, hire and manage contractors and staff required to execute the artistic and administrative plans;

  • Ensure compliance with federal, provincial and municipal regulations and ensure submission of required CRA/Corporate Affairs documents.

Financial Management

  • Develop, update and manage the annual operating and long-term plan / budget, and detailed project budgets (with Board approval);

  • Provide bi-monthly reports and facilitate the preparation of annual financial statements with external accountant;

  • Work with a part-time bookkeeper to prepare monthly reconciliations, process payroll and maintain accurate records of financial transactions.

Requirements:

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE DESIRED

  • Strong interest in the performing arts and community engagement.

  • Excellent organizational skills: managing critical paths, creating timelines, maintaining schedules, tracking/documenting materials, proofreading copy, etc.

  • A strong and vital commitment to right relations and the lived experience of collaborators and team members, volunteers and audiences.

  • Experience managing small teams and training team members and/or volunteers.

  • Experience creating and managing budgets.

  • Experience working with youth is an asset.

  • Problem-solving skills: You think and plan ahead, anticipate potential problems/outcomes, react and solve problems as required. You’re able to adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Highly developed grant writing skills and a track record of writing successful funding submissions

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Comfortable working with a variety of people such as presenters, arts councils, volunteers, board members, current and potential donors, small business owners and community groups with a commitment to building respectful relationships.

  • Comfort in evolving projects and ability to prioritize deadlines.

  • Drivers license is an asset.

Must be comfortable using:

  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • Excel or other spreadsheet data management software, Word, MS Teams.

  • Google Products: Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets and Gmail primarily

  • Familiarity with basic bookkeeping processes; QuickBooks knowledge is an asset

Application Deadline: Sunday May 9 / 11:59pm

Salary: $25 to $27/hour, depending on experience. Nakai budgets for and implements annual cost of living increases. The position includes a basic health benefit package through the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce.

Holidays: 4 weeks (20 days) paid holiday annually, to be arranged in collaboration with the Artistic Director.

Note: Nakai welcomes applications from all eligible to work in Canada, but we do not have funds for relocation.

This is a permanent salaried position and will be subject to a six-month probationary period as per Yukon Employment Standards Act.
